Recently, in an unfortunate accident, I dropped my favorite mix tape on the ground from several feet in the air. That’s the exactly what it takes to ruin a VHS. When I tried to play the tape back, it was stripped of color and scrambled. I work in a medium that has a set lifespan, and I believe that this self-destruction is central to my pieces, but I was still very upset about losing my tape. My work kills itself, slowly, over time. I wasn’t ready for murder. Then a friend of mine, Kevin, heard about my loss and showed me this piece by composer William Basinski called The Disintegration Loops. A review in Pitchfork wrote this about the tapes (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/577-the-disintegration-loops-i-iv/). It seemed fitting for the occasion.
So here is the beginning of what might become a project: an obituary for my lost tape, set to Basinski’s Loops.
